Client Tales
You know in my field, we encounter a numerous amount of people who can be quite interesting in both the way they react to a creative idea and the statements they make when they want to critisize it.
Not too long ago I presented this campaign to one of my top clients for the launch of a new product. In the campaign I had used historical figures like Niro, Marie Antoinette and Shakespeare…
24 hours later we got a call telling us that they had to reject the campaign because their bosses had got back to them on it. According to their bosses, they couldn’t run the campaign because they had no proof to solidify the fact that Niro, Marie Antoinette and Shakespeare had actually used this new product, which was about to be launched.
So the next time someone says that (some) clients aren’t as dumb as ad people think them to be… Excuse me for not agreeing…
Offensive TV
A few weeks ago I happened to stumble upon a loud argument involving my cousin and my aunt. The latter (a 17 year old girl) was being told off in style for her obession with Sex & The City. My aunt was furious at how open the topic of SEX was on the show and found that four women who had nothing better to do than bicker about who they were planning on sleeping with next was an absurd concept. Moreover, she was outraged at the fact that my cousin refused to stop watching it because of these reasons.
As I listened to the ongoing battle of two generations I remembered my aunt saying that she was an ardent ‘Dynasty’ fan. Now here’s the funny part. The people of yesteryear claim that the TV shows they watched back then were rich in context and had heavy storylines to keep people entertained while always knowing where to draw the line on certain social topics.
However, while doing research on Dynasty for a friend of a TV forum, I realized that the entire show was as ‘bad’ as the older generations claim today’s shows have become. The entire series was a saga of sex, lies and scandal and revolved around the Carrington family who constantly got into bed with each other be it their aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews or siblings from other unknown marriages.
It doesn’t stop there. The storylines and certain scenes were as crazy or even crazier than some of the stuff we see on TV today. In the top 100 moments of television history, Joan Collins and Linda Evans’ “Lilly Pond Cat Fight” made the top ten. The show visited areas such as illigitemate children, rape, gay relationships, aids, extra marital affairs, women sleeping with men far younger than them and men siring children off women who happen to be their servants.
Now as much as there is nothing wrong with any of these subjects, the older generation seem to get very offended when the same subjects seem to come up in the TV shows we watch today. They say that our shows lack substance and while they may be right to a certain degree, I would say that the only thing that has changed on TV from then to now are the hairstyles and clothes.
If what we’re watching is crap then they’ve watched more or less the same sort of crap.
A few examples…
TODAY… Charmed – Three sisters who discover they’re the most powerful witches of all time, a gift handed down to them from generations past. Their everyday struggles, amongst other things, include trying to fit into a normal life. YESTERDAY… Bewitched – The story about a witch – Samantha – who marries a mortal and tries to fit into a normal life, which is almost impossible with magical relatives flashing into the living room every other week.
TODAY… Heroes – A group of people from around the world who discover they have strange abilities and use them to help people. YESTERDAY… Misfits of Science – A group of teenagers who discover they have special abilities and use them to help people.
TODAY… Desperate Housewives – In a little suburban town, four friends deal with their desperately detereorating marriages. They have affairs with each other’s spouses and get into a series of mixed up miscalculated experiences that keep the audience in confused suspence. YESTERDAY… ALLO ALLO – A French Cafe Owner is working for three different parties who are all against each other during the reign of Hitler. To add spice to his life, he is married and yet has an affair with both girls who work for him, who happen to be prostitues and there is a gay liuetenant who wants to get it on with him at the same time.

D.I.D. you know how serious it was?
DID – Dissociative Identity Disorder or Multiple Personality Syndrome as most people will call it, is quite a common mental condition around the world. However, I was shocked to hear that when one of my friends had visited a Sri Lankan doctor with regard to this issue, he was told that his problem was something put on.
A lot of Sri Lankan folk are unaware of how dangerous DID can be and the people who go through it can barely find anyone to talk to. They don’t understand what’s going on because when a SUB-IDENTITY takes over, your PRIMARY-IDENTITY goes into hybernation. The Primary Identity goes through a blackout phase while the Sub Identity makes conversation and carries on with day to day life like it was their own life they were living.
How does this happen? When an individual goes through an extreme bolt of trauma, the brain refuses to accept what has happened. Therefore, within the main cerebral cortex, other areas begin to develop, areas that highlight specific character traits of the individual that may not be linked to the individual’s primary identity.
A woman in the United States was once diagnosed with 254 personalities residing in one body. They each had names and they were each so different from each other that you would be alarmed at how they interacted with one another.
While the Author Sydeny Sheldon is full of stories that can intrigue you and even though they get monotonous after some time, one of his books was written to deal with this issue that many people turn a blind eye on – a book titled “Tell Me Your Dreams”.
What’s interesting to know is that every personality residing within a single individual has their own sense of dress, different colors and kinds of food they enjoy and different ways of life they like to lead. Most people born under the sign of “Gemini” are destined to go through this phase at some point in their life – the duality of the sign plays a great role in their lives, even though they don’t know it.
The reason I take such great interest in this subject is because I too went through a similar phase in my life and it was important for me to understand why my clothes would never be where I left them or why I would wake up in parts of my house that I never remember going to. Fortunately for me I had the assistance of an American Doctor who herself had been through the same endavor.
DID is a very serious illness and in some cases the Sub Identities cause the Primary Identity to collapse within the body, killing the part of the brain that caused the Primary Identity to survive. If you know someone going through similar issues, don’t take it lightly.
I think that’s enough seriousness for the day, shall be back later.
Till then,
B.

The Traditional Sri Lankan Wife
Hey guys,
Here we are at yet another week’s end. As most of you know, I’m just completing my 1st book, which is titled “The Fairy Dance”, this will hopefully be done by mid-March and I hope to launch it soon after.
I’ve mentioned on the page in this blog I’ve dedicated to the book that I already have an idea for my second book, and this thought, I shall share with you now.
In the Fairy Dance, there is one part that is dedicated to the traditional Sri Lankan wife and what they’re expected to do according to society, our society. Their family values and what they stand for. Now even as I read this particular part of the book, while I was busy editing it, I was convinced that the next book I write has to be on this subject. I’ve already thought of a name and I shall let you know about it as soon as I’m done with the Fairy Dance.
It will be dedicated to the traditional Sri Lankan wife, and I intend to involve some real life stories in this book, stories that will show the evolution of the Sri Lankan woman who plays the role of wife, from then to now. Shall keep you posted but for now enjoy the weekend…
I’ve been told by sources that my DVD man is in the building and I have to catch him before it’s too late. See you on Monday.
till then and then…
