Like I said last week, this is TV Characters week and I thought who better to start with than my favoritest character…  Ling Woo from Ally McBeal.

A character essayed by Lucy Liu, Ling Woo was one of the most loved and most hated characters of the show. She joined the show in the middle of the second season and stayed on until the middle of the fifth and final season as a woman who was – if not anything else – honest.

She never denied the fact that she loved Richard Fish for his money and had to her credit the great art of “giving hair”!

She was a talented lawyer although she never saw the point in practicing law. She hid her true feelings so much that when she actually fell in love for the first time she called it a “mental problem”.

Among Ling’s most memorable scenes is her breakdown in the “Searching for Pygmies” episode and her kiss with Ally McBeal in yet another episode.

The sound of the growl used when Ling frowns became a signature sound for the character itself and whenever the growl would sound off on the show, you knew that Ling was around the corner.

Ling had one of the most remarkable exits yet to be seen. She and Nelle happily run into a pram on their way to lunch but fake their glee over the baby inside it when in truth they both hate babies. However, the baby turns out to be the grandnephew of a high court judge, who out of the goodness of his heart, makes Ling a judge herself.

That ladies and gentlemen is Ling Woo. The first of ten characters to be honored on Television Characters Week here on the black lullaby.
